Masters in Theology (Preaching)

An opportunity for experienced preachers to be stretched, challenged and refreshed; to reflect on their practice and develop professionally and personally. Participants must have completed a minimum of two years full-time (or equivalent) theological study, and have been in a Christian preaching ministry in any denomination for at least two years.

The application form for the MTh course is available only on the Spurgeon's website.

Course structure:

The MTh degree is in two parts. Part One consists of three modules. Part Two consists of a dissertation of up to 20,000 words. A Postgraduate Diploma will be available to students who are unable, with good cause, to continue with the dissertation, or whose work does not reach the standard required for an MTh. The course can be started in either February or September.

Course content:

There is one compulsory module:

  • The Theology and Practice of Preaching

A further two modules are taken from the following list:

  • Personal and Corporate Aspects of Preaching
  • Preaching and Postmodernity
  • Preaching and Narrative
  • Preaching and Worship

The dissertation must be on a topic which falls within the subject matter of the degree.

Course costs:

  • Each module (and the dissertation) £750
  • University Registration Fee £303
  • Charges are made for meals/accommodation as required.

Course method:

The course employs specially designed open learning materials. These enable participants to study in their own locality, and to learn from their own experience of ministry. This individual study is complemented by a study week at Spurgeon’s at the start of each module. Support is provided through regional groups, a website, email or telephone contact with the Colleges’ staff.

Course assessment:

There are no exams. Each module is assessed using continual assessment. This normally means two 4,000 word essays and one sermon with a 2,000 word commentary.

Course length:

The total course may take between two and five years with each module lasting a minimum of six months.

Further study:

Students taking the MTh can use it as a foundation for the Doctor of Ministry programme with the University of Lampeter, allowing in-depth study of an aspect of ministry while continuing to be actively engaged in the work of the Church.
