- Luton - ‘Refreshment for the Experienced Preacher’ with Canon Roger Spiller, Director of Ministry, Coventry Diocese, 8 November 2008. Do you feel your sermons tend to get stuck in a rut, find yourself saying the same thing in different ways or different things in the same way? Here`s an opportunity to take a fresh look at the way you ‘shape’ your sermons (why not a ‘plot’ rather than ‘points’?), and at ways of painting pictures with words, to engage peoples` imagination as well as their intellect. For bookings, you are invited to contact Richard Armiger tel. 01582 603413
- Stafford (Rising Brook Methodist Church) - ‘Preaching Advent, Christmas and Epiphany’ with Canon Chris Burkett, Chester Cathedral, 8 November 2008. If, like me, you came across the first fully decorated Christmas of the year in August you may be worried about how jaded the season of goodwill can become. How can preachers present too-familiar themes with a freshness that restores their good news? Here's a way into preaching that throws out the faded tinsel and lets the Star shine. For bookings, you are invited to contact Gill Ashmore tel. 01785 616433
- Bishops Stortford - ‘Switching Channels – Preaching and Popular Culture’ with Paul Johns, Director of the College of Preachers, 15 November 2008. The ‘soaps’, ‘reality TV’ and endless advertising - are we being entertained and manipulated to death? Should we preachers stuffily dismiss it all, trendily embrace it or engage with it biblically? Suppose God is speaking to us through our culture of leisure and consumption. How do we listen? Are we preachers cut out to be critics of culture? If so, how do we go about it? For bookings, you are invited to contact Richard Armiger tel. 01582 603413
- Colchester - ‘The use of the Bible (Old Testament) in preaching’ with Rev. Bill Mahood, Minister and Former Moderator in the United Reformed Church, 22 November 2008. The Bible is central to the worship and preaching of the church. But it`s easy for our use of it to become tired, stale and stereotyped. We neglect its lively range of literary forms and its subversive messages. The Old Testament often seems hidden behind the New. Come and explore ways in which we can preach from it so that it`s fresh and transformative for today. For bookings, you are invited to contact Richard Armiger tel. 01582 603413
- Wellingborough - two seminars, 17 January 2009.
1. ‘Not by sermon alone – preaching and worship’ with Judy Jarvis, Methodist Local Preacher and former Vice-President of the Methodist Conference. Some acts of worship are formal with a familiar pattern; others informal and innovative. There`s a place for both; and a place for preaching in both. This seminar is an opportunity for preachers and worship leaders to explore ways in which sermon and liturgy (formal or informal) can complement each other to create a coherent and inclusive worship experience. 2. ‘The Use of the Bible in Preaching’ with Rev. Dr. Gordon Kuhrt, p/t Minister of Tredington Parish (Oxon), and former Director of the CofE Ministry Division. The Bible is central to the worship and preaching of the church. But it`s easy for our use of it to become tired, stale and stereotyped. We neglect its lively range of literary forms and its subversive messages. Come and explore ways in which we can preach so that the Bible can be heard again, in fresh and transformative ways. For bookings, you are invited to contact Peter Cooper tel. 0116 271 5525

This is an opportunity to discuss the theological and cultural case for sermon as story, and to share some practical tips on how to preach narratively.
